What your thesis editor checks
Section by section β what professional thesis editing covers
Professional thesis proofreading is not a global spell-check. Each section of your thesis has different conventions, different register requirements, and different things that go wrong in non-native English. Our editors know them all.
When to submit for editing
Thesis editing timeline β plan before your deadline
One of the most common mistakes in thesis submissions is leaving editing too late. Use this guide to plan when to submit your thesis for professional proofreading. All figures assume 7-day working capacity β for exam season, add 20%.

Editing in action β real thesis abstract
What professional thesis editing looks like in practice
A real example from a Master's thesis abstract at ETH Zurich β computational biology, German-speaking student. The before version is comprehensible. The after version reads as if a native English speaker wrote it. The research is identical. The language is not.
Before: non-native English draft
"In this thesis we try to show that machine learning can be used for the prediction of protein structure with better accuracy than traditional methods. We have done experiments using three different deep learning architectures, and the results we got show that our model works 23% better compared to the current standard. These findings have importance for drug discovery applications, as faster protein structure prediction can help to speed up the identification of drug targets."
After: professionally edited
"This thesis investigates the application of machine learning to protein structure prediction, demonstrating superior accuracy relative to conventional methods. Three deep learning architectures were evaluated and the results obtained indicate that the proposed model achieves 23% greater accuracy than the current benchmark. These findings have significant implications for drug discovery, as accelerated protein structure prediction facilitates the identification of novel therapeutic targets."
First-person informal replaced with academic third-person. "Investigates" is the correct verb for a research thesis β "try to show" signals uncertainty and informality. Your abstract must assert, not attempt.
Passive voice correctly applied in methods reporting. First-person active ("we have done") is acceptable in some contexts but incorrect in thesis abstract methodology β passive voice removes the writers from the scientific process, which is the standard academic convention.
"Works better" is informal and vague. "Achieves 23% greater accuracy than the current benchmark" is quantitatively precise and academically appropriate. ETH examiners read hundreds of abstracts β precision signals competence immediately.
"Have importance" is a direct translation from German ("haben Bedeutung"). In academic English, findings "have implications" β not "importance." This is a German-to-English transfer error invisible to a general proofreader and immediately visible to an ETH examiner.
What professional thesis editing achieves that tools cannot
Your protein structure model still achieves 23% greater accuracy. Your drug discovery implications are still there. Every scientific claim, data point, and conclusion remains exactly as you wrote them. Only the English around them has changed β from non-native to publication-standard.
A computational biology thesis goes to an editor with a computational biology background. They know "protein structure prediction" and "therapeutic targets" and "drug discovery" β and they know the specific register those terms require in ETH thesis abstracts.
"Findings have importance" (haben Bedeutung), "we try to show" (wir versuchen zu zeigen), "the results we got" β these are the invisible marks of German academic thinking expressed in English. Our editors look for these patterns precisely because they know them.
Every significant edit includes a comment explaining the academic English principle. Your next thesis chapter's abstract will be better β because you understood why the changes were made, not just received a corrected version.
